News
from the last CIMG monthly meeting
The last monthly meeting was well attended
and two presentations were given. The CIMG Secretariat would
like to make a special thanks to the Canadian Embassy for
hosting the last CIMG meeting. At the beginning of the meeting
Canadian Ambassador to China, Mr. Robert Wright gave a short
address. Nigel Clark also provided an update on some upcoming
CIMG initiatives and urged members to be involved in the CIMG's
activities around China Mining 2007 as well as the drafting
of the CIMG's 2007 White Paper. Nigel made a note of thanks
Vivian Feng from CVRD/Inco and the other members for coordinating
the draft. Auslan Ishmael then gave a brief update on the
CIMG's last mission that visited Ningxia, Shaanxi and Henan
Provinces. The mission he said focussed on Coal and he noted
that much opportunity exists in this sector given China's
pressing need for energy. As well, he said that the mission
was able to visit a number of leading coal mining operations,
such as Asia American Coal Inc's Daning mine. The mission
visited a number of Chinese mines that were up to world class
standards, using foreign technology and contractors.
The
first presentation was given by Jay Chmelauskas, Director,
President and Chief Executive Officer of Jinshan Gold Mines.
Jay holds a Geological Engineering degree from the University
of British Columbia as well as an MBA from Queens University
in Kingston, Ontario. Prior to becoming president of Jinshan
Gold Mines, Mr. Chmelauskas managed business development and
other corporate finance activities for the company from Beijing.
He has extensive international experience as an engineer and
financial analyst in the resource sector and gold mining industry,
including operating experience at one of the largest remote
gold mines in the Asia Pacific region. Jinshan Gold Mines
is a Canadian mining company focused on the exploration and
development of gold projects in Asia. The company operates
the CSH 217 Gold Mine in Inner Mongolia and is conducting
exploration work on other prospective properties in China.
He outlined the development of the 217 Gold Mine and how the
mine had begun to add to local economy via the multiplier
effect. He noted that through engaging the local community
and being accessible to them, Jinshan is able to work closely
with the local community ensuring that their needs are met
and concerns addressed. His presentation can be downloaded
by email Jay at jayc@jinshanmines.com.
The
second presentation was by Mr Hou Huimin the Vice Chairman
of the China Gold Association. Mr Hou is a well known analyst
in China's gold sector and presented on the history of China's
gold sector. The CGA was set up in 2001 According to the provisions
of CGA, to provide a platform and create channels for China's
gold producers, processing businesses, wholesalers and retailers
to exchange information and link together to promote the development
of gold industry in China. He noted that gold mining in China
dates back thousands of years and China could soon be the
largest gold producer in the world.

Conferences
from CRU
10th World Stainless Steel
Conference
4-6 November 2007, Shimao, Taiyuan, Shanxi, P.R. of China
Over
the last two decades, the consumption of stainless steel has
grown faster than those of zinc, aluminium, copper, lead and
carbon steel. A faster rate of growth is likely to be maintained
in the years ahead. But it may have resulted in global over-investment
in production capacity, jeopardising the industry's prospects.
The most prestigious industry event for the global stainless
steel community will cover all the latest key issues. Senior
executives from the most influential global and Chinese stainless
steel companies will be taking part and sharing their vision
for the industry in Taiyuan this year. For more information
please visit the CRU
