Tarmac Aggregates (Huzhou) Ltd., a subsidiary company of Anglo American won the Mining Environmental Protection Award at China Mining 2007 on 14th November, a great recognition of the Yang Quarry's achievements.
Tarmac acquired the limestone quarry at Huzhou in Zhejiang Province in late 2003. The quarry was previously operated by five local businesses with a low level of capital investment and very limited environmental protection capabilities. Since the acquisition, Tarmac invested a substantial amount to improve the environmental standards at the quarry. The management team followed Anglo's world standard on environment stewardship and developed a comprehensive plan for environmental protection and restoration.
The business also invested heavily in the process plant to reduce diesel consumption and incorporated dust collection equipment, dust suppression systems, sound reduction barriers and noise enclosure structures to minimise the impact on the environment. The planting of trees and grass around the site area and the comprehensive use of quarrying by-products have all minimised the impact on the environment and ensured maximum recovery of mineral resources. Zhejiang Province, where Yang quarry is located, upholds the operation as a 'model quarry' and encourages other quarry operators to visit. In addition, Yang quarry is the first quarry in Huzhou to receive an environmental license and is quite possibly the first in Zhejiang Province too.
