Tarmac China has recently established a large limestone quarry near Huzhou in Zhejiang Province for the supply of up to 3 million tonnes per annum of high quality limestone aggregates for the asphalt industry in Eastern China. In addition, Tarmac China also has majority control of several asphalt operations in Shanghai and Hong Kong, responsible for the manufacture of a range of asphalt products, including coloured asphalt and the execution of road surfacing projects and road maintenance services. Before Tarmac began operating a quarry in China, ERM helped develop a community engagement strategy to establish and maintain contact with local villagers. Tarmac is now holding monthly community forums and has appointed a full-time Community Liaison Officer to keep local residents informed of Tarmac's operations and to deal with problems as they arise. This is the first time such an approach has been used for a quarry in China.
