Many mining, oil, and gas companies operating in China are aware of the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to build their social license to operate in local communities and contribute to local human development through their operations. However, because these practices are newer in China, and because there is a lack of locally-relevant information and resources, designing and implementing these programs in China can still be a challenge.
On November 12th 2007, BSR together with the China International Mining Group (CIMG) hosted a workshop in Beijing on community development, a key CSR issue for the extractives industry. After the workshop, some of the participating companies, suggested setting up a platform for mutual learning and sharing of information and experiences related to corporate social responsibility. On March 25th 2008, BSR and CIMG held a kick off meeting to discuss the feasibility of an extractives industry CSR work group based in China (EIWG) and to identify areas mutual interests to serve as the focus for this group. The meeting was well-attended by company representatives, Chinese and international government agencies, NGOs and academics. Based on the enthusiastic response and the good discussions, during the meeting we believe there are strong benefits to regularly bringing stakeholders together to discuss and share CSR practices in a structured way.
There are three key objectives for the Extractives Industry Working Group (EIWG):
Objective 1 - Awareness Raising The first goal of the group is to build a common understanding of what CSR means for the extractives industry in a Chinese context. The group will raise awareness amongst participants on the merits of taking a proactive, strategic approach to managing CSR in their businesses and understand the latest trends and developments in how companies manage these issues both globally and locally.
Objective 2 – Information & Good Practice Sharing The group will also serve as a platform for companies to exchange information and share best practice on effective CSR practice for companies operating in China and for Chinese companies operating abroad. We will aim to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to better align business performance with social and environmental needs.
Objective 3 – Engaging with Stakeholders In addition to company participants, the group will regularly integrate government, NGO, academics and technical experts into the meetings. These stakeholders will enrich the meeting discussion and provide invaluable feedback.
