The event is being supported by the Sichuan BGMR and the Chengdu University of Technology. The facilitation of this event is being undertaken by the CIMG and the CMA.
The dialogue/workshop sought to enhance the understanding of sustainable mining practices in the provincial areas of China - in this case the Southwestern Provinces. It also sought to create a platform to increase information sharing between foreign and domestic mining companies on the value of sustainable mining, how to implement sustainable mining practices and what additional needs of industry that the local authorities could consider.
The content of the dialogue/workshop was industry driven with the aim of producing a joint position paper with suggestions for local regulators on the development of sustainable mining practices in provincial China. Experts including mining executives (domestic and international) and academics to discussed the development and implementation of sustainable mining in the south western provinces of China.
This dialogue/workshop was being organized at an opportune time when the government is looking to expand the ferrous and nonferrous mining and metals industries of the country as well as focusing on the development of its environmental policy and social harmony.
This dialogue showed how the concepts of sustainable mining are changing and that the implementation of sustainable mining is case specific and how a greater understanding of risks associated with mining developments can create opportunities. Case studies were also presented to examples of identifying and managing, hidden and emerging risks and how to maximize economic benefits to local communities.
